A man on Youngstown's south side had a cache of weapons, food and explosives on hand in order to survive the disaster that could have been Y2K. You can read the story here, but the Vindicator doesn't explain everything about the story, like why this guy was shot by intruders.
The short version is that a guy on the south side had generators, assault rifles, ammunition, smokeless gunpowder, ammonium nitrate, grenades, mortar shells, and a bazooka in his house. That's right; a bazooka. Oh, and he had four or five refrigerators in the house, one stocked with more than 30 pumpkin pies and Cool Whip.
You can't make this kind of stuff up.
Friends of the man say he is a nice guy who works hard and wouldn't hurt anyone. I, for one, have no problem believing that. If this guy wanted to he could have started his own little Charles Bronson meets The Punisher vigilante war and cleaned up the south side gang problem single handedly. If he were so inclined, he could have obliterated half a dozen crack houses before anyone had any idea that a guy with a bazooka and some ammonium nitrate was in a bad mood.
I think this one goes into the books as a guy who was a little slow, obsessed with survivalism and who had maybe watched one too many George Romero zombie movies. Y2K didn't happen but since he lived on the south side of Youngstown he probably figured some sort of apocalyptic holocaust was just around the corner. Why throw out all those pies?
As for the Vinidicator, they get a "C" for reporting. The story states that the weapons cache was discovered when the owner of the house was taken to the hospital after being shot in both arms by intruders. He asked a friend to look after the house while he was incapacitated. After all, some crack head looking for a DVD player to pawn might have discovered the arsenal and that wouldn't have worked out well for anyone. The friend discovered the weapons and, not being crazy, called the police. There is no mention of why the man was shot. Was it a robbery, a gun deal gone bad or just one of those home invasions that city residents have come to expect? Who knows? The Vindicator didn't ask.
